I Title Development of interactive multimedia service technology for T-DMB (Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) 2. Objective and Motivation of the Research A. Objective The objectve of the research is to develop technologies for providing various bidirectional interactive multimedia services through T-DMB and telecommunication networks in order to support the proliferation of T-DMB services. B. Mottvation of the Research Through the evolution of broadcasting and telecommunication technologies such as the digitalization of broadcasting tech iques and the convertpence between broadcasting and telecommnication services, interactive data services that bring up a new TV watching trend frorn passively viewing delivered AV programs to lively participating to broadcasting programs or actively acquiring various types of information through broadcasting programs become feasibi. "-DvMB, which was developed and commercialized in Korea for the first tine in the world is rapidly disserninated because not only users readily access broadcasting sex ice regardless of spatio-temporal restrictions but also they can easily access various data services providing news, traffic information, weather miormation, etc. The various multimedia data services in conjunction with the mobility would create various types of new business models: therefore, it is expected that the new paradigm of broadcasting services would generate trem rndous social-cultural and industrial influence. it is ample to seize users' service consuming pattern in order to have a successful T-DMB data service. To support this demand, the development of interactive multimedia service technology for T-DMB is an urgent issue. The interactive multimedia technology for T-DMB conssts of a TIDMB multimedia contents framework and a DMB application service platform. The T-DMB multimedia contents framework includes the T-DMB interactive multimedia contents authoring technology based on MPEG-4 technology, the i DMB broadcasting contents transmission technology to transmit bidirectional T-DM1 contents, and the bidirectional contents management technology to support bidirectional interactive ser ices. The DMB application service platform provides TT (Travel and Traffic Infrmation) based bidirectional DMB application services. Thmroug the interactive multimedia service technology for T-DMB developed by this research would have a hug contribution to the proliferation of T-DMB services and the "acquiiition of birectional data service technology for T-DMB is expected to become a core industrial engine among new generatiol IT growth Dowers. . Subject and Scope of the Research A. 'Target * Development of interactive contents framework technology for T-DMB * Deveiopmient of TT ap phlation ser ice platform tor T--DMB SGlobalization of T-DMB B. Stubject and Scope The subject and scope of this research i as follows; * Development of interactive contents framework technology for T-DMB D evelopment of D'TV to DMB c contents converting technology SDeelopment of interactive contents authoring technology * Development of interactive contents transnmssion server technology Development of return channel server technology for bidirectional service * De,elopment of TT appication service platform for T-TMB * Development of TPEG based realtime traffic information service technology SDevelopment of extended TPEG based TTI service technology SDevelopment of bidi ectonal TTI service technology * (lobahzation of i-DMB SIternational collaboration on T-DMB SDriving multilateral international demonstration 4. Results of the Research The technologies acquired from this research are as follows: * T-DMB interactive contents framework technology + T-DMB contents converting technology * T-DMB contents authoring technology * T-DMB contents transmission technology STE-DMB return channel serer technology for bidirectional service * F-iDMB T-TI application service platform technology STPEG based realtime traffic information service technology * Extended TPEG based TTI service technology The final products of this research are as follow: * Unidirectioinal/bidirectional interactive contents authoring system for T-DMB * Unidirectional/bidirectional MPEG-4 contents transmission server for tD)MB * Unidirectional/bidirectional authoring and transmission server for TTI application service * Uriidirectional/bidiectional receiving platform for TTI application service 5.Sugtgestions for Applications By providing the bidirectional interactive services on T-DMB through the technologies and the final products acquired through this research, it can b iused for the proliferation of T-DMB services and the preoccupancy of the global mobile broadcasting market. 6. Expected mpacts he expc.ted irmpacts of the developed technologies are as follows: s The realization of a mobile multimedia broadcasting service through which users can enjoy the various types of content anytirne and anywhere * To open up a new industry and a market by providing the first commercial mobile multimedia service in the world To be utelieid as a core system for T-DMB interactive multimedia services * he early acquisition of T-DMB core technologies *. Leding telated international standardizations on mobile broadcasting services * The continued predominance in competitive power enlargement of digital industries including cellular phones, DTV, etc. * he increment of the comfortness of digital lifestyles, the proliferation of digital lifestyles and the aileviation of different accessabilities of digital information through the expansion of demanding digital contents I The contribution to increase the quality of life by providing the ease of a media consuming env ironment.
