Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 12, 1965):
Designed by James Renwick and erected between 1847 and 1855, this is the finest remaining example of Norman Revival civil architecture in the country. Constructed of red Seneca sandstone, it was built to house the Smithsonian Institution, established by the generous bequest of James Smithson, English scientist and illegitimate son of the Duke of Northumberland, and chartered by Act of Congress in 1846.

Condition:
Systems and structural upgrades remain a priority.

The building is in need of system and structural upgrades but a lack of Congressional funding has delayed the work. The issue is not the amount of funding needed (approximately $200,000), but when it is needed. The Institution plans to do the work but has many other priorities for the restoration. Current Priority Status: Watch

Recommendation/Change since last report:
The current estimate to restore the Smithsonian Institution Building is nearly $89 million. The Federal Government is a partner with the Smithsonian Institution in the stewardship responsibility for the Smithsonian Castle. A joint commitment to provide the necessary resources for renewal and preservation is vital to the faithful execution of ths public duty.
