It first appeared in the state in 1994 and increased in popularity in 2004 after decreasing slightly in 2003. Millennium, introduced in 2001, became the second most popular variety, replacing Pronghorn which dropped to third. For the 2004 crop, Alliance accounted for 13.6 percent of the acreage while Millennium was planted on 11.1 percent. Pronghorn was planted on 10.4 percent with 2137 in fourth place at 7.8 percent. Arapahoe continued to decline and finished fifth with 6.8 percent. District Highlights The most popular wheat variety in the Northwest and Southwest, where over seventy percent of Nebraska's wheat acres are grown, is Alliance. Wesley was the most popular in the North, East, and Southeast. Jagalene was the most popular in the Central district while 2137 topped the list in the South. Millennium's strong presence in the Northwest, Southwest and South propelled it to second overall, while Pronghorn's second place finish in the Northwest kept it third overall. Hard White Winter Wheat: Percent of Planted Acreage, Nebraska, 2000-2004 Variety 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Percent All White Varieties 0.1 0.6 0.2 2.0 1.7 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Of the total hard white winter wheat acreage reported on this survey, 75 percent was planted to Platte, 11 percent to Trego, and 11 percent to NuPlains. The remaining 3 percent was unspecified or too small to publish. Funding Supporting funds for this report, "Nebraska Wheat Varieties" were provided by Nebraska Wheat Board from wheat producer check off funds. Data Source This wheat variety data was provided by the voluntary reports of over one thousand Nebraska wheat producers who responded to the 2003 Fall Agricultural Report. The summary included reports representing thirteen percent of the state's total planted acreage estimate. Variety Descriptions Alliance, a moderately short height and early maturing variety, has fair to good winter hardiness, fair test weight, acceptable protein, and good milling/baking qualities. It has shown above-normal tolerance for crown/root rot and is moderately resistant to stem rust. This variety was produced from a cross of Arkan, Colt, and Chisholm sister line by Nebraska and the USDA-ARS. Millennium is a medium maturing, medium height variety and is well adapted throughout most of the Nebraska dryland wheat production areas and adjacent states. It has a good test weight, high grain yield, fair to good winter hardiness, shorter length coleoptile, very good tillering ability, and moderately strong straw. It is resistant to Hessian fly; moderately resistant to stem leaf and stripe rust; susceptible to soilborne mosaic and barley yellow dwarf viruses. It has average protein and good end-use quality characteristics for milling and baking. Millennium was developed by Nebraska and the USDA-ARS from the cross Arapahoe/Abilene//NE86488. Pronghorn, a tall variety of moderately early maturity, has good tillering ability and moderately strong straw. It has good yield stability in the Nebraska panhandle and dryland production in adjacent states. Yield is comparable to Buckskin with superior stem rust resistance. It has a long coleoptile and good early spring regrowth along with good winter hardiness. The grain has very good test weight patterns and milling/baking qualities. It was developed by Nebraska and the USDA-ARS from the cross Centura/Dawn/Colt sib.
