Pronghorn Antelope

EQIP funds will encourage conservation measures that will facilitate recovery of the pronghorn antelope. These projects will provide landowners with technical and financial assistance to implement practices that will restore and maintain Pronghorn Antelope habitat.

Resource Concern: Wildlife Habitat

Eligible Counties:

  • Brewster
  • Presidio
  • Jeff Davis
  • Culberson
  • Hudspeth
  • Reeves
  • Pecos
  • Screening Criteria:

    High Priority

    Offered acres have an existing pronghorn population and are within the core pronghorn habitat areas of Brewster, Presidio, Jeff Davis, Culberson, Hudspeth, Reeves and Pecos Counties as identified by TPWD map.

    Medium Priority

    Offered acres are adjacent to or within 5 miles of existing populations.

    Low Priority

    Offered acres are potentially suitable pronghorn habitat, but not within 5 miles of existing populations.

    Ranking Criteria:

    Issue #

    1. (100pts.) Are 100 percent of existing exterior fences pronghorn friendly or are you willing to modify 100 percent of your exterior fences to make them pronghorn friendly?

    2. (95pts.) Are 100 percent of existing interior fences pronghorn friendly or are you willing to modify 100 percent of your interior fences to make them pronghorn friendly?
      (requires approval of adjacent landowner)

    3. (90 pts.) Are you installing Brush Management by selective mechanical control or chemical IPT to improve pronghorn habitat?

    4. (85 pts.) Are you willing to carry out a 24 month grazing deferment in key Pronghorn areas to enhance grassland conditions and improve fawning cover? (subject to limitations)

    5. (80 pts.) Are you willing to modify 50 percent or more of your non-pronghorn friendly exterior fences to make them pronghorn friendly?

    6. (75 pts.) Are you willing to modify 50 percent or more of your non-pronghorn friendly interior fences to make them pronghorn friendly?

    7. ( 70 pts.) Are you willing to carry out a 12 month grazing deferment in key Pronghorn areas to enhance grassland condition and improve fawning cover? (subject to limitations)

    8. (65 pts.) Will new cross-fencing be installed to improve overall grazing management or to partition key pronghorn areas with pronghorn friendly fences?

    9. (55 pts.) Are you actively involved in a predator control program between January and May to increase fawn survival? (participant must provide documentation)

    10. (50 pts.) Are you willing to modify 25 percent or more of your non-pronghorn friendly exterior fences to make them pronghorn friendly?

    11. (45 pts.) Are you willing to modify 25 percent or more of your non-pronghorn friendly interior fences to make them pronghorn friendly?

    12. (40 pts.) Are you applying to install Brush Management with Tebuthiuron (Spike)? ( limited to 20 percent of an enrolled pasture)

    13. (35 pts.) Are you applying to install Contour Ripping and seeding?

    14. (30pts.) Are you applying to install fireguards for prescribed burning?

    15. (25pts.) Are you applying to install pronghorn friendly wildlife watering facilities?

    16. (15 pts.) Has the land being included in the EQIP application been under an active TPWD Wildlife Plan for the last 2 years that specifically addresses pronghorn habitat management practices?

    17. (10 pts.) Are you willing to develop a TPWD Wildlife Management Plan within one year of EQIP funding that addresses pronghorn habitat management?
