Ground-Water Pumpage

USGS in cooperation with DOE developed a transient ground-water flow model of the Death Valley region of southern Nevada and southeastern California to examine the impact of NTS activities on the regional ground-water system. Because ground-water pumpage is the most significant anthropogenic activity affecting regional ground-water flow paths, an initial digital database of spatially and temporally distributed ground-water pumpage throughout the Death Valley region through 1998 was completed (Moreo and others, 2003 http://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/wrir034245/).

Renewed pumping and increases in the number of water-use applications for large ground-water withdrawals from areas directly south and east of the NTS has occurred in response to population growth in Las Vegas and Pahrump. In anticipation of efforts to evaluate the impact of increased pumpage on regional flow paths, the objective of this study is to extend the pumpage database to include the most recent pumpage data through 2003 (dvrfs_withdrawals_2005_public.zip*).
