Abstract: This study reports the first use of gas-permeable, heat-sealable polyethylene bags for cold storage of plant tissue cultures. The bags were used to develop a new cold storage system for the in vitro strawberry collection at the National Clonal Germplasm Repository (NCGR), Corvallis. In vitro Fragaria plantlets of 96 different accessions (species and cultivars) were transferred to bags with basal medium without growth regulators, heat-seated, grown for one week at 25 degrees C, cold hardened for one week, and then stored in the dark at 4 degrees C. These in vitro cultures were successfully stored for up to 24 months in polyethylene bags. Evaluations at three month intervals provided information on the condition of the diverse collection. Over 75% of the accessions originally stored remained in storage for 15 months and 47% remained for over 18 months. None of the 96 accessions studied was lost due to contamination or decline in vigor. Over 300 Fragaria accessions are currently stored using this system.

Abstract: The feasibility of field-scale CO2 enrichment of vegetable crops grown under tunnel culture was studied with cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Dasher II), summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L. cv. Gold Bar), and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Bingo) grown under polyethylene tunnels. The drip irrigation system was used to uniformly deliver a CO2-enriched air stream independent of irrigation. Carbon dioxide was maintained between 700 and 1000 microliter.liter-1 during daylight hours. Enrichment began immediately after crop establishment and continued for approximately 4 weeks. At the end of the treatment phase, enrichment had significantly increased plant dry weight in the 2 years of tests. This growth advantage continued through harvest, with enriched cucumber, squash, and tomato plots yielding 30%, 20%, and 32% more fruit, respectively, in 1989. In 1990, cucumber and squash yields were increased 20%, and 16%, respectively. As performed, the expense of CO2 enrichment represented less than a 10% increase in total preharvest costs. A similar test was conducted on fall-planted strawberries (Fragaria X ananassa Duch. cvs. Irvine and Chandler). Carbon dioxide enrichment under tunnel culture modestly increased 'Irvine' yields but did not affect 'Chandler'.

Abstract: Florida-developed strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) clones or varieties grown in Florida nurseries and California-developed varieties grown in Canadian nurseries were evaluated in fruiting studies in Florida during four seasons. Transplants were defoliated so that 0%, 35%, 60%, or 87% of the foliage was removed. The Florida clones 'Dover' and selection 79-1126 gave significant linear and/or quadratic early and total marketable yield responses to defoliation treatments for all seasons. The Canadian-grown clones 'Chandler' and 'Selva' gave similar responses during three seasons, but differences were not as great as for the Florida-grown clones. Many significant linear and quadratic responses in seasonal average fruit weight and plant size occurred for Florida-grown plants, but only one occurred with the Canadian-grown plants. Relative plant size at early and midseason decreased with greater defoliation.

Abstract: The primary free polyamines identified during growth and development of strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) microcuttings cultivated in vitro were putrescine, spermidine and spermine. Polyamine composition differed according to tissue and stages of development; putrescine was predominant in aerial green tissues and roots. alpha-DL-difluoromethylarginine (DFMA), a specific and irreversible inhibitor of the putrescine-synthesizing enzyme, arginine decarboxylase (ADC), strongly inhibited growth and development. Application of agmatine or putrescine to the inhibited system resulted in a reversal of inhibition, indicating that polyamines are involved in regulating the growth and development of strawberry microcuttings. alpha-DL-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a specific and irreversible inhibitor of putrescine biosynthesis by ornithine decarboxylase, promoted growth and development. We propose that ADC regulates putrescine biosynthesis during microcutting development. The application of exogenous polyamines (agmatine, putrescine, spermidine) stimulated development and growth of microcuttings, suggesting that the endogenous concentrations of these polyamines can be growth limiting.

Abstract: Strawberry plants (Fragaria X annanasa D. cv Chandler) were grown in field plots and in drainage lysimeters under controlled soil moisture regimes. Four irrigation treatments were established by watering the plants when soil water potential reached -0.01, -0.03, -0.05 and - 0.07 MPa. The maximum yield was attained at -0.01 MPa soil water potential. Differences in yield were caused by both changes in the number of fruits per plant and in the fresh weight per fruit. Yield reductions were associated with reductions in total assimilation rate resulting from the decreased assimilatory surface area in plants irrigated at lower soil water potentials. The crop water production function calculated on a fruit fresh weight basis resulted in a yield response factor (Ky) of 1.01.

Abstract: An automated system that uses sprinkler irrigation to protect crops from frost was tested on a strawberry planting during fall frosts. The automated system used a microcomputer to monitor environmental conditions within and external to the crop canopy, determined when and how much water to apply, and controlled the irrigation system in order to adequately protect the crop. Results show that the system was effective for both protecting the crop from coldweather damage and reducing the quantity of water used when compared to conventional approaches. The automated system used 76% less water than a conventional system during a mild frost event and 25% less during a severe frost event.

Abstract: 'Earliglow' strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duchesne) plants were frozen to -5 or -50C to examine the distribution of ice in the crowns. Anatomical studies were also performed to characterize tissue growth in a greenhouse at 4, 8, and 15 weeks after freezing to -5C. Ice masses observed in fresh crown tissue corresponded to the presence of extracellular tissue voids in specimens fixed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Voids were present near the peduncle and adjacent to the vascular system in crown tissue. After plants were grown in the greenhouse, cell division and enlargement were observed near the voids in crowns subjected to -5C. By 15 weeks after freezing, a few small extracellular voids remained in the crowns. Tissue voids were also present in crowns of plants frozen rapidly to -50C and subsequently thawed. Cells in the crown of these plants were intact and did not appear collapsed after exposure to -50C, a lethal temperature.

Abstract: The genetic relationship between vegetative growth at low temperatures and productivity was investigated for strawberries grown in controlled and field environments. Genotypes from 20 biparental crosses were grown in controlled environments with 11 degrees, 14 degrees, and 17 degrees C days, 11 degrees C nights, and 11-h daylength to simulate a range of winter growing conditions expected in mediterranean environments. Individual plants were scored for two initial runner traits and eight vegetative growth traits. Significant main effects of temperature and cross were detected for all growth chamber traits, and conservative estimates of the broad sense heritability (h2) for these traits were 0.10-0.28. None of the temperature X cross interaction effects were significant, suggesting that genetic potential for vegetative growth and vigor is expressed similarly at low and optimal growing temperatures. Highly significant genetic correlations were detected between many growth chamber trait pairs, indicating pleiotropic effects for the genes that condition these traits. Complementary field trials were established, and individual plants were scored for traits that describe yield, production pattern, and plant size. Significant negative genetic correlations were detected between traits that describe growth in the chambers and early production in the field trials, but genetic correlations between chamber growth traits and mid-season or total production were significantly positive and occasionally large. using traits scored in the nursery can be used to improve yield and modify production pattern in the field.

Abstract: Three irrigation treatments (none, drip, and sprinkler) and eight rowcover treatments were evaluated for their capacity to provide freeze protection for strawberries (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) in a split-plot factorial field experiment The period under study included 20 freeze events, two events with minima of -9.5C and -10.0C. With no freeze protection, up to 93% of the flowers were damaged by freezes. Among sprinkler-irrigated plants, an average of only 10% flowers were damaged due to the freezes. Heavy-weight rowcovers (polyethylene blanket and polypropylene, 30 and 50 g.m-2, respectively) protected strawberry flowers as well as sprinkler irrigation to -4.4C. Early yield (December-January) from unprotected plants was negligible. Early yields from plants protected with a 3.2-mm polyethylene blanket or a 50 g.m-2 polypropylene cover were equal to yields obtained with sprinkler-protected plants. Combinations of sprinkler and certain rowcover treatments provided for better fruit production than either treatment alone. Drip irrigation alone provided no protection from freezes. All strawberry plants recovered from freeze damage and total-season yields were similar with all irrigation methods and rowcovers.

Abstract: Three mathematical indices were developed to estimate: 1) potential for early dollar return or early ripening (IE), 2) concentrated cropping (IC), and 3) deviation similarity of a genotype to known cultivars (ID). Early ripening genotypes with high yield early in the season will have larger IE values than late genotypes with lower yield early in the season. Genotypes with few harvests will have larger IC values than those requiring several harvests. The ID index helps to identify and group genotypes with similar characteristics. These indices condense numerous values or arrays of traits into single index values, thereby simplifying genotype comparisons.

Abstract: Components of variance were estimated for 10 strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa) color traits to determine their relative importance and to design optimal sampling strategies. The color attributes of > 2000 fruit from 47 genotypes from the Univ. of California Strawberry Improvement Program were evaluated over three harvest dates (HDs) in one growing season. Measurements were obtained for a moderate number of fruit from each genotype on each date, and two measurements were obtained for each trait on all fruit. Variances for HDs were nonsignificant or small (0% to 8% of the total variance). Genotype X date variances were highly significant but small (less than or equal to 6% of the total) for all color traits except internal hue (14% of the total). For external color traits, the within-fruit variance was greater than the among-fruit variance (16% to 64% and 0% to 14% of the total, respectively). For internal color traits, the among-fruit variance was greater than the within-fruit variance (20% to 37% and 9% to 19% of the total, respectively). Obtaining two measurements per fruit for several fruit on one HD is an efficient strategy for characterizing a genotype's fruit color; seven to 22 fruit are needed to estimate a genotype's fruit color within 2 units (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage L*a*b* or degrees) with 95% confidence.

Abstract: Twenty-one western and 13 eastern strawberry [Fragaria X ananassa (Duch.)] cultivars were grown in a polyethylene-covered greenhouse (polyhouse) in deep beds at either 10 X 10 or 25 X 25 cm spacing. Runners were removed weekly from the closest-spaced plants (hills), and the more open-spaced plants were allowed to set four runners on each side of the mother plant before the runners were removed (matted rows). Temperatures were allowed to fluctuate normally in the polyhouse, except that winter temperatures were maintained above 0C. The average yield of eastern and western cultivars did not differ significantly in most comparisons, but the average fruit weight of the Californian cultivars was significantly higher than the eastern ones, and Californian cultivars allocated a higher proportion of their biomass to reproduction. Nonbearing plants of eastern and western cultivars produced similar numbers of runners per plant and daughters per runner. There was no significant relationship between CO2 assimilation rate and yield. Interbreeding eastern cultivars with the most productive western genotypes might result in increased yields, but only if the higher reproductive efforts of the western types can be captured and transferred.

Abstract: Runner plants from 16 strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) cultivars were grown using annual Mediterranean production systems to test for differences in productivity, performance traits, and vegetative growth attributes. Genotypes were included from germplasm adapted to four geographic regions: California and northwestern, northeastern, and mid-Atlantic or southeastern United States. The California genotypes were divided further into day-neutral and June-bearing categories. With these treatments, California cultivars had significantly larger plants and grew more rapidly during the fall and winter, had larger fruit, and produced at least twice the quantity of fruit of cultivars from the other regions. Variance components due to region explained 64% and 26% of the phenotypic variance for early and total yield, respectively, whereas differences among cultivars within regions explained 12% and 7% of the variance for these traits. Cultivars from all regions had significantly larger plants and were more productive when treated with 3 weeks of artificial vernalization. However, region X vernalization effects were nonsignificant for all traits, a result suggesting that selection in Mediterranean environments has not adapted germplasm specifically for low vernalization conditions.

Abstract: The main effects and interactions of soil-applied P, B, and Zn on yield and its components were examined in the field at two pH, levels with 'Earliglow' strawberries (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.). Applied nutrients had significant effects on several yield components, but responses depended on the levels of other nutrients or the soil pH. At a soil pH of 5.5, yield responded linearly to B and quadratically to P. At pH 6.5, P interacted with B and Zn. Fruit count per inflorescence was the yield component most strongly associated with yield, followed by individual fruit weight. However, these two yield components responded differently to soil-applied nutrients. Foliar nutrient levels generally did not increase with the amount of applied nutrient, but often an applied nutrient had a strong effect on the level of another nutrient. Leaf nutrient levels were often correlated with fruit levels, but foliar and fruit levels at harvest were not related to reproductive performance. Our study identifies some of the problems inherent in using foliar nutrient levels to predict a yield response and demonstrates how plant responses to single nutrients depend on soil chemistry and the presence of other nutrients.

Abstract: Abstract: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of the foliar application of CaCl2 on the shelf life and Ca content of the fruit of the strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa) cultivars Kent and Glooscap, which differ in fruit firmness. Calcium was applied repeatedly, 3 days, 3 and 6 days, or 3, 6, and 9 days before harvest at 0, 10, or 20 kg.ha-1. Calcium treatment influenced amounts of free sugars and organic acids, color, texture, and disease development during storage in air at 4C. Calcium application had more effect on the fruit of the softer 'Glooscap', which contained relatively low levels of Ca at the time of treatment. Calcium content of the fruit appeared to depend mainly on the ability of the plant to accumulate and distribute Ca.

Abstract: The advantages of pre-plant fertilization were studied by using a slow-release fertilizer (nitrophoska permanent) with strawberry plants (Fragaria ananassa, cv Chandler) before fertigation. A sandy soil was used in the experiment in conditions of abundant rain. When the slow- release NPK was mixed with soil, the leachate analysis of a glasshouse crop showed a lower loss of N and therefore a lower degree of ground water contamination compared with the traditional NPK fertilizer. However, when the fertilizer in question was placed at 10 cm from the surface, as in the case of ornamental plants, the results were less favourable. Consequently, the slow-release fertilizer mixed with the soil not only increases the N uptake by the plant as well as the leaf and root weight. but it also produces higher yields.

Abstract: The effect of preculturing in vitro plantlets of two strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) cultivars grown on micropropagation medium with and without hormones on regenerating shoots from leaf disks was examined. Preculturing stock plants on micropropagation medium with hormones (BAP at 0.5 mg.liter-1 + IBA at 0.5 mg.liter-1 + GA3 at 0.2 mg.liter-1) promoted shoot regeneration in the two cultivars tested. Using hormone-containing micropropagation medium for preculture, the highest mean regeneration rate of 9.9 shoots per total number of leaf disks was obtained for the Finnish cultivar Hiku on modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) regeneration medium supplemented with (in mg.liter- 1) 2000 KNO3, 400 casein hydrolysate (CH), 3 BAP, and 0.1 IBA. For the Norwegian cultivar Jonsok, the highest mean regeneration rate of 12.8 shoots per total number of leaf disks was obtained on modified MS regeneration medium with (in mg.liter-1) 600 CH, 3 BAP, and 0.1 IBA.

Abstract: Abstract: Strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) was grown for two seasons with microirrigation. Preplant fertilizer treatments of zero, one, two, three, and four times the basic N and K rate of 17 and 15 kg.ha-1, respectively, were applied each season. Additional N and K were applied twice weekly through the microirrigation system at 1.12 and 0.92 kg.ha-1.day-1, respectively. Total marketable fruit yield and marketable fruit per plant were not affected by preplant fertilizer rate. The percentage of marketable fruit increased with increased preplant fertilizer to the 51N-45K (three times basic rate) kg.ha-1 rate the first season. Average fruit weight increased the first season but decreased the second season with increased preplant fertilizer. Plants were larger the first season in treatments receiving preplant fertilizer.

Abstract: Photosynthesis and growth of in vitro-cultured strawberry plantlets (Fragaria X ananassa Duch. cv Kent) were investigated during a 4- week in vitro culture in a rooting medium and a 4-week ex vitro period. The leaves formed in vitro on a medium containing sucrose developed a positive photosynthetic capacity. At transplanting to the ex vitro environment, their photosynthetic rate was 12.76 micromoles CO2/ml per second, which was as high as that of leaves generated and grown in the greenhouse. During the ex vitro period, photosynthetic rates of in vitro- generated leaves decreased and dark respiration rates increased. However, in vitro leaves were photosynthetically active throughout the 4 weeks ex vitro. In the first 2 weeks of the ex vitro period, in vitro-generated leaves had an important contribution to the overall plantlets' photosynthetic capacity.

Abstract: A four-year study was conducted to evaluate the potential reduction of irrigation withdrawals from deep aquifer sources for strawberry production in central Florida using a runoff recovery system. The system was designed to return surface runoff resulting from overhead sprinkler irrigation or excessive rainfall to a retention pond for reuse in subsequent irrigation events. Results showed that when properly managed, the recovery system reduced deep aquifer withdrawals by 50-70%. Data collected to quantify soil runoff characteristics both during irrigation events for crop growth, and for crop protection against frost and freeze periods resulted in a highly significant (p = 0.01) predictive equation describing the relationship between continuous pumping time and percent recovery of water applied.

Abstract: Two independent studies conducted in 1986-87 and 1987-88 provided evidence that rowcover-modified microclimate can enhance yield component development in strawberry (Fragaria xananassa Duch. cv. Earliglow). Early autumn rowcover application in 1986-87 followed by removal at bloom increased mean diurnal temperatures and degree-day accumulation in autumn and spring compared with controls without rowcovers. For rowcovered plants, leaf growth continued longer in autumn and resumed earlier in spring, and more trusses and flowers were produced. In 1987-88, increased production of marketable fruit with rowcovers occurred in the absence of an increase in flowers and appeared to be primarily due to increased development of tertiary berries.

Abstract: Soil solarization, alone and combined with metam sodium (MS), was evaluated as an alternative to methyl bromide and chloropicrin (MBC) fumigation, the standard soil disinfestation technique in the California strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) industry. Tests were conducted in two consecutive annual production cycles in Irvine, Calif., an environment representative of the coastal strawberry production area. Solarization treatments were applied from late July through September for October plantings. Treatments were equally effective in reducing baited populations of phytophthora cactorum [(Lebert and Cohn) J. Schrot] (1989-90) and P. citricola Sawada (1990-91) when compared to pathogen survival in nontreated soil. Solarization and MBC reduced Verticillium dahliae Kleb inoculum in 1989-90, but MBC gave superior control in 1990-91. Solarization significantly controlled annual weeds, but was less effective than MBC. In 1989-90, solarization alone increased strawberry yield 12% over the yield of nontreated plots; when combined with MS, yield increase was 29%, equivalent to that achieved with MBC fumigation. Treatments were equally effective in increasing yields in the 1990-91 test.

Abstract: Plants of 'Selva', 'Pajaro', and three Univ. of Florida strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) selections were grown near Dover, Fla., for five seasons using the annual hill cultural system. Genotype X environment interactions were significant for both marketable yield and fruit weight; therefore, stability analyses were performed. None of the genotypes had consistently high marketable yield, but one of the selections, FL 81-1350, had relatively large and stable average fruit size. A genotype was desirable if it had a mean yield (or fruit weight) above the grand mean of all five genotypes, a regression coefficient less than or equal to 1, and a nonsignificant deviation from regression.

Abstract: 'Totem' strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) were planted with clean-cultivated inter-rows or inter-rows planted with permanent cover crops of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) or 'Manhattan' perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). There were no significant differences between treatments in the number of twospotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch), strawberry aphids [Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell)], or Pratylenchus sp. or Xiphinema sp. nematodes on strawberry plants. The cover crops reduced strawberry yields relative to cultivation, although fruit size was significantly larger the second year. Root weight did not differ significantly in either year. Weight of above- ground vegetation was significantly higher in cultivated plots the first year, but not the second year.

Abstract: Abstract: Foliar sprays of increasing concentrations (0, 75, 150, 300, 600, and 1200 mg.liter-1) of paclobutrazol were applied to 'Cardinal' strawberry plants (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) 35 days after transplanting. The plants were established in August in cultivated plots for measurement of paclobutrazol effects on first year growth or in a double-row hill system on black polyethylene-covered raised beds for 2nd year measurements. Increasing the paclobutrazol concentration reduced the number of runners, decreased runner length, and limited biomass partitioned into daughter plants. By the end of the first growing season, paclobutrazol had increased lateral crown development but reduced leaf area per treated plant. Root growth was reduced by concentrations >600 mg.liter-1. Treatment with 75 to 300 mg.liter-1 increased total plant dry weight by 33% to 46%. The following spring, plant growth was decreased by greater than or equal to 300 mg.liter-1. Yield was increased by all treatments, except 1200 mg.liter-1. Leaf net photosynthesis increased within 12 days after treatment with paclobutrazol and was higher than in the controls the next summer. Leaf stomatal conductance also increased the first year and was significantly higher the 2nd year after treatment. The optimum concentration of paclobutrazol for strawberries appears to be between 150 and 300 mg.liter-1.

Abstract: Eight day-neutral and seven short-day strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) varieties were evaluated on raised beds during 1990 and 1991 in the Fraser River valley, B.C. Among day-neutral varieties in 1990, total variation in marketable yield originated in fruit count (26%), total yield (18%), average leaf size (22%), and runner count (19%) per plant. In 1991, total variation in marketable yield originated in fruit count (38%), runner count (23%), crown count (13%), and total yield (16%) per plant. 'Selva' was one of the most productive day-neutral varieties and had the heaviest fruit and the fewest culls during both years of the study. The short-day varieties had uniformly low yields of marketable fruit during the establishment year, 1990. Variation in marketable yield in 1991 originated in runner count (34%), total yield (18%), and fruit count (16%) per plant. Of the short-day varieties in 1991, 'Shuswap' had the highest marketable yield and, along with 'Pajaro' and 'Sequoia', had the fewest culls. 'Shuswap' was a prolific producer of runners, while 'Sumas' and 'Redcrest' yielded well without prolific runner production.

Abstract: Iron deficiency chlorosis (FE-DC) results in an extensive reduction in the fruit yield of strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) grown on high pH calcareous soils. Three cultivars, differing in their response to Fe-DC, were grown on a high pH (8.2) calcareous soil (15.4% calcium carbonate equivalent in surface 20 cm) in the field (Choueifat, coastal area of Lebanon) to determine what effect Fe-DC had on fruit yield when the foliage was sprayed with Fe [FeEDDHA, Ferric ethylenediiminobis (2-hydroxyphenyl) acetate]. Unsprayed plants were used as the control. No significant interaction (p<0.05) between cultivar X Fe spray treatment was obtained, and no significant difference (p<0.05) between one and two Fe spray(s)/week treatments were noted for visual Fe-DC rating, fruit numbers, and fruit yield. Cultivars sprayed once/week produced higher yields than unsprayed controls. Overall increases were 33% (13% for 'motto', 30% for 'Chandler', and 56% for 'Douglas'). Even though only slight Fe-DC was noted on the 'Motto' cultivar receiving no Fe spray, fruit yields were increased when plants were sprayed with Fe. However, significant increases in yield for the 'Chandler' and 'Douglas' cultivars with severe Fe-DC ratings were obtained when they were sprayed with Fe.

Abstract: The waiting-bed (WB) system has the potential to significantly increase the length of the strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) production season. In the WB phase of this system the plants were deblossomed and runners were removed to stimulate the production of a multiple crowned plant. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of planting date and cultivar on yield potential and vegetative growth of the strawberry plants in the WB and cropping beds (CB). Experiments were conducted in Ontario and Quebec. Early establishment of the WB favored the production of large multicrown plants. 'Kent' appeared to be the best cultivar among five tested due to the many berries produced because of good fruit set. Yield potential was not realized in late-planted CB. The highest yields per plant (273 g) were obtained in Quebec with plants from the earliest WB. Yields in CB decreased with later plantings due to stress of transplanting when air and soil temperatures were high. Berry count was identified as the yield component most affected by the later planting date of the CB. The WB system has potential for season extension in strawberry, but WB must be established early in the season to encourage the development of a plant with high yield potential.
