Description/Abstract This paper is an expository survey of some recent and current academic research in the theory of system reliability and safety applicable in the analysis of large complex systems such as nuclear reactors, computers, space vehicles, etc. The survey is far from complete; rather, it tends to reflect topics and papers in which the present authors have been particularly interested, or have performed research themselves.^It tends to emphasize new approaches in reliability, many nonparametric, rather than standard parametric approaches whose underlying ideas are well known and have been in use for a long time.^The paper is to appear in the 1976 Special Issue of the IEEE Transactions on Reliability.^(Author) (GRA)
