The post-tanking inspection operation on launch pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center was temporarily halted to allow hypergolic deservicing of the Orbiter Maneuvering System aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The hypergolic deservicing is expected to be finished this evening. Once the pad is opened again for workers, post-tanking inspection will resume, and workers will also prepare Atlantis' Auxiliary Power Unit #3 for removal tomorrow and reinstallation in Discovery. In parallel, rollover of the orbiter Columbia to the Vehicle Assembly Building is expected to occur shortly after midnight tonight. Inspections on the external tank 17-inch disconnect have been finished and Columbia has been cleared for flight. Workers have been installing the aft compartment doors and are preparing to transfer the orbiter transporter to the Orbiter Processing Facility for mating operations with Columbia. Also, the External Tank for Discovery is being stacked today inside the VAB and that operation is expected to be concluded by this evening. ******** The new cosmonaut crew was launched to the Mir Space Station today, according to the TASS NEWS AGENCY via AP. The current crew plans to return home Thursday, August 9. They have been aboard the Mir since February 11. During the mission, the cosmonauts are expected to receive a joint Soviet-Japanese crew that will be launched on December 2 on an eight-day mission, according to the Interfax News Service. ******** Norman Augustine, Chairman and CEO for Martin Marietta Corp. and recently named to head the Vice Presidential Advisory Committee on the Future of the U.S. Space Program, said he would disqualify himself in cases where he or a NASA-supplied attorney believe a conflict would exist between his position as Committee Chairman and Chairman of Martin Marietta. In an interview with Aerospace Daily, Augustine said he intended to take "a number of steps to ensure that we do have an objective view" and indicated that some of the measures would include open meetings and a "one member-one vote" policy for Committee members. ******** NASA Administrator Richard Truly speaks to the National Faculty of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education today at 4:00 P.M. The teachers will meet in Alexandria, VA through Friday, and they will hear from a number of NASA Headquarters speakers.
