Pollock participated in the 14th Street workshop formed by Siqueiros in 1936. The Mexican muralist argued that to be socially transformative, art needed new materials and methods. He encouraged his helpers to use commercial paints, to splatter and throw color, to roughen their paint textures, and to work on canvas tacked on the floor.
