[Dow Chemical Company; Results of Range Finding Toxicological tests on Hexachlorobutadiene for Thirty Days (1956), EPA Document No. 878214898, Fiche No. OTS0206678] Acute inhalation toxicity was evaluated in groups of 3 rats (sex and stain not reported) Animals were exposed to hexachlorobutadiene vapor at a saturated concentration for 1 hour, at concentrations of 200 ppm for 2 hours and 4 hours, and at 500 ppm for 4 hours. Mortality was observed in 1 animal in the 200 ppm dose group exposed for 2 hours, 2 animals in the 200 ppm dose group exposed for 4 hours and in all animals in the 500 ppm dose group exposed for 4 hours. The LD50 was not reported. Clinical observations included marked eye irritation, nasal discharge, gasping, sluggishness, wet nose and eyes, and irritableness. Gross necropsy revealed moderate hemorrhage of the kidney medullary in animals exposed to 200 ppm for 4 hours.
