Description/Abstract Sweep efficiency can be improved and channeling toward the production well reduced by injection of a sacrificial agent either prior to injection of the viscosifier or dissolved within the polymer slug.^The viscosifier is usually a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide and it is preceded or accompanied by a sacrificial agent, usually sodium carbonate or sodium tripolyphosphate.^The sacrificial agent is preferentially adsorbed adjacent to the injection well thereby reducing adsorption of the viscosifier which, in turn, decreases the darcy velocity of the flooding medium and increases injectivity.
