Description/Abstract | The article profiles the manufacters` longwall shearers in the US.^There are currently 5 manufacturers of shearers; Anderson Mower, Eickhoff, Jeffrey, Long-Airdex/Mitsui Miike and the sales leader, Joy.^The equipment available from these manufacturers is discussed.^The manufacturers` forecasts for the future of the market are also discussed.^There is general agreement that longwall mining as a percentage of underground mining is approaching a plateau.^The limiting factor is seen as the outby haulage capacity which prevents the operator using more powerful machines.^The development of electric haulage and multimotor machines in the late 1970s is seen as a turning point in shearer development.^The manufacturers see automation as more of a milepost than a turning point.^There are various assessments of the potential ranging from simply getting the man out of the dust by 1993 to a man-less face by 1999.^There are various approaches to the new low-seam coal market, but all the manufacturers are surprised by the market`s slow development.^2 tabs., 1 photo. |
