Out From the Shadows: Two New Saturnian Moons

Cassini has identified two new Saturnian Moons, which may be the smallest bodies seen so far around the ringed planet. The moons, located 194,000 kilometers (120,000 miles) and 211,000 kilometers (131,000 miles) from the planet's center, are between the orbits of two other saturnian moons, Mimas and Enceladus. The fact that these moons exist where they do might provide limits on the number of small comets in the outer solar system, a quantity essential for understanding the Kuiper Belt of comets beyond Neptune, and the cratering histories of the moons of the giant planets.

After a nearly seven-year journey, the international Cassini-Huygens mission has begun its four-year tour of Saturn. The craft is studying the planet using 18 highly sophisticated science instruments. Through Cassini, scientists hope to gain a better understanding of Saturn, its famous rings, its magnetosphere, Titan, and its other icy moons. The spacecraft will release its piggybacked Huygens probe about six months after arriving in orbit for descent through Titan's thick atmosphere. The probe could impact in what may be a liquid methane ocean. Titan is of particular interest to astrobiologists because it is the only known moon in the Solar System with its own atmosphere. Studying the organic chemistry of Titan's atmosphere, which could resemble that of early Earth, may help scientists understand the origin of life on our planet. Understanding how life emerges from cosmic and planetary precursors is a primary goal of astrobiology.

Studying Kuiper Belt objects is important because some scientists have suggested that these objects may contain water deep below their surface. However, most astrobiologists consider Kuiper Belt objects an extremely unlikely habitat for life. Yet, comets originating from the Kuiper Belt and beyond may have supplied Earth with the precursors for life as we know it.
