• NTIS (National Technical Information System Bibliographic Database) is the largest single source for public access to federally-produced information. The database covers information on federally-generated machine-readable data files and software, U.S. government inventions available for licensing, reports on new technologies developed by federal agencies, federally-generated translations, and reports prepared by non-U.S. government-sponsored research. • OSTI (Office of Scientific and Technical Information) maintains a database for all of the Department of Energy (DOE). The purpose of this database is to archive and retrieve technical data, reports, journals, etc., generated by various laboratories in the DOE complex. This system can be accessed remotely by DOE and contractors through modem. There are over a million technical reports archived at OSTI. This office provides an alternative to the National Technical Information Services (NTIS) for DOE and its contractors. Tracking Research in Progress (RIP) for the DOE is a function of OSTI. DOE laboratories are required to provide information to this office for include into the OSTI Database. DOE Order 1430.1C, 2-27-92, Management of Scientific and Technical Information required that all DOE Department Elements and DOE contractors involved in the creation of scientific and technical information report all information used, developed, or accumulated to the Office of Technical Information (AD-21), Office of Information Resource Management.
