FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Public Information Office CB95-147 301-457-2794 301-457-4067 (TDD) Larry Carbaugh 301-457-1242 CENSUS BUREAU PRODUCT ADVISORY A comprehensive new "electronic atlas" is now available from the Department of Commerce's Census Bureau. Called "LandView II," this Geographic Information System was jointly developed by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This easy-to-learn electronic atlas includes EPA-regulated Superfund site data bases, social and demographic data from the 1990 census, and key geographic features of the United States, such as rivers, airports, and pipelines. The data are organized by state and groups of states on a set of 10 compact discs. Within each state, Census Bureau TIGER/Line files digitally describe detailed networks of roads, rivers, railroads, and landmarks, as well as state, county, congressional district, city and town, Indian reservation, census tract, block group, and metropolitan area boundaries. Linked to this information, LandView II contains 1990 social and demographic census data, including population and household characteristics from 100-percent and sample data bases. An 11th CD provides data and map information for the entire country, but not the detailed geography (roads, rivers, railroads, etc.) found in the state files. Users can search, display, and print data for specified geography. They also may draw and print thematic maps (see sample attached). Circulation and marketing departments may use LandView II to locate on a map and profile their readers and potential readers. Price: $95 per disc or $795 for 11-disc set.
