Shalala has announced the appointment of Robyn I. Stone of Bethesda, Md., as a deputy assistant secretary for planning and evaluation in the Department of Health and Human Services. In her new position, Stone will concentrate on developing and coordinating policies across HHS to support people of all ages with disabilities including children, working age adults and the elderly. She also is the department's point person for the long term care portion of the president's health care reform plan. During February through May while on leave from her job with Project HOPE, Stone served as chair of the Long-Term Care Work Group of the White House Task Force on Health Care Reform. Before joining HHS, she had served since 1990 as senior research director, Project HOPE, Center for Health Affairs. In 1989-1990, on loan from HHS' Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (until December 1989 the National Center for Health Services Research), she was a research analyst for the U.S. Bipartisan Commission on Comprehensive Health Care (the Pepper Commission). Stone is a native of Baltimore, Md. She received her bachelor's degree in urban affairs from the University of Pennsylvania, 1972; master's in public administration, University of Pittsburgh, 1978; and a doctorate in public health, University of California at Berkeley, 1985. Since 1986, she has served as a consultant to a number of organizations involved with the elderly and long-term care issues. Stone has written extensively. Her areas of special interest include health and long-term care for the elderly and disabled, family caregiving for the disabled and income security for older women. Her professional affiliations include the American Public Health Association; Gerontology Society of America; National Council on Aging; and the Association of Social Sciences and Health.
