This layer was derived from the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Information Resource Center data for the years 1984 through 1995. Purpose: These data was created to show recent coal-mine production history. The Nation's coal resources are being reassessed by the USGS. A fundamental component of this assessment work is to compile digital geologic and geographic data into a Geographic Information System (GIS). Use of this GIS allowed for the spatial integration of data layers. This resulted in the ability to display, analyze, and query data to answer complex geo-spatial questions concerning coal resource occurrence. In some instances MSHA's data set contains obvious location discrepancies. The locations are sometimes of the mine itself (proper), but might be of structures and entities associated with the mining operation, i.e.: the mining office, rather than the mine pit. Mine locations were verified by referencing various publications listed below in Source_Information under lineage. Data_Set_Credit: G.L. Sullivan, USGS, collected 12 years worth of coal-mine production data from MSHA that were stored on diskettes or on the internet. He worked with very large files (approx. 140,000 entries) in EXCEL and ACCESS to obtain one file of mines and locations. Computer processing methods were developed. The data were converted to an Arc/Info coverage to use for spatial analysis. The data was provided in two sets of files: 1. A Master Information File (MIF), available from the web site at www.msha.gov, is referred to as Part 50 data. This file contains the location data of all mines (and other data) opened or active since 1971. 2. Yearly production and inspection data files. A file (diskette) was available for each year from MSHA offices in Denver. The years 1984 through 1995 were chosen to represent mining activity in the Colorado Plateau study area. In order to create a data set of coal-mine-only locations with yearly production tonnages for each mine, location data from the MIF was merged with the yearly files: The yearly files were imported into Microsoft Access databases, one for each year. Each of these was filtered to obtain a subset of data containing the MSHA id, mine company, mine name, state and county FIPS codes, mine type, status and yearly production. When the yearly databases were complete, they were combined into a single database. This was then filtered to obtain only the mines in the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona (Production table). The MIF was filtered in a similar fashion to obtain a database of coal mines in the four states containing MSHA id and the latitude/longitude locations of each mine (Location Table). The two tables (Production and Location) were joined on the MSHA id, which is unique to each mine in each table, to create a database table containing the information from both tables (Final table). Awk scripts were written and used for sorting and arranging data and summing coal tonnages. This Final Table was exported from Access as an ASCII file, reformatted and imported into ARC/INFO to create a point coverage of locations and a .pat with mine data (name, company, yearly productions, etc). The coverage was clipped to the extent of the Colorado Plateau study area. AMLs were developed and used for importing the data into Arc/Info and for plotting maps. Locations were verified by referencing publications listed as sources in this document. Process_Contact: Contact_Information: Contact_Person_Primary: Contact_Person: Sullivan, G.L.
