Galileo Europa Mission Orbital Elements

rule.gif

The Galileo Europa Mission (GEM) is an extended tour of the Jovian system by the Galileo Spacecraft and has eight Europa encounters, four Callisto encounters, and two Io encounters. The GEM elements begin at Jupiter apoapsis on the primary tour's orbit 11, November 26, 1997 and extend the end of mission to January 4, 2000.

The order of the satellite encounters and their dates are:

     Europa December 16, 1997
     Europa February 10, 1998
     Europa March 29, 1998
     Europa May 31, 1998
     Europa July 21, 1998
     Europa September 26, 1998
     Europa November 22, 1998
     Europa February 1, 1999
     Callisto May 5, 1999
     Callisto June 30, 1999
     Callisto August 14, 1999
     Callisto September 16, 1999
     Io October 11, 1999
     Io November 26, 1999
The orbital elements given below are Keplerian (semi-major axis, eccentricity, inclination, node angle, arg of periapsis, and mean anomaly). The reference frame is Earth ecliptic and equinox of J2000. The central body for each set of elements and the valid time period for those elements are indicated.

Times are given in both Julian date format in ephemeris time (ET) and calendar date format in Greenwich mean time (GMT). For the general exposure that these elements will receive, GMT has been used and is understood to be the same as universal time (UTC). To clarify any ambiguity between these two time formats, the delta-time (ET minus UTC) and the epoch of each value of delta-time are:

     63.184 seconds 01 July 1997
The set of Jupiter-centered elements comprise a complete set of elements for general use. The body-centered elements at close approach are included for completeness and are valid only for those times.

The complete set of orbital elements for the Galileo mission are found in four sections: Interplanetary Elements, Probe Elements, Tour Elements, and GEM Elements.
