In 2005, the U.N. General Assembly designated January 27 as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The resolution was adopted by consensus on November 1, 2005. January 27 is currently officially recognized as a day of remembrance for Holocaust victims in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany, because it marks the day when an advancing Soviet army liberated the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland.
