RICH MECHANICAL MEETING AGENDA 1/xx/03 -HC C0 -RICH Tank Topics, Liquid radiator thermal analysis Quartz glued to a plastic vessel causes large stresses and deflections in the vessel. Quartz glued to a plastic vessel backed by a carbon fiber skin has two advantages. The first is the c5f12 doesnt touch the carbon fiber and the second is the carbon fiber thermally stabilizes the plastic. A footnote here is that the plastic sheets typically only come 96" long not 2.5 meters (98inches). Results are shown on the web page. Note the thermal bowing is about 1 mm for a 10 deg F temp change. Liquid radiator prototyping. To address thermal issues, we may want to purchase a 3mm quartz rod, available at about $1 per foot, and glue it to a plastic/carbon substrate that is the full 2.5 meters long and the correct crossection, then the thermal issues may be investigated and also we could measure the amount of curvature that occurs in the assembly during temperature changes. Quartz quotes, Getting quotes on the order of $20,000 for quartz. Quote is based on pieces 20 inches square. A 6" square 3mm thick is available for $50. It may be possible to fuse smaller pieces into a single larger sheet. Fabricators then worry about handling and shipping the large sheet. MAPMTs Current thought is to support the MAPMTs off of a socket in the electronics card. The electronics card would then be attached to a backbone structure - possibly a "C" channel. Four MAPMTS will be attached to each electronics card. The C channel will be attached to the tank using bolts at the ends of the C channel. If a curved MAPMT surface is desired, spacers of different thicknesses can be put between the electronic card and C channel. Most likely the outer cover for the MAPMT electronics will provide the gas seal between c4f10 and air (the MAPMTS will operate inside the tank gas volume. The tank will have to be drained to remove or repair a MAPMT). Some 3d sketches are shown on the web page. Rear window Parts are here for the prototype but the technicians are not available due to the beam shutdown. Test Beam topics, HPD array for the test beam Syr. should have mechanical Drawings. Comments about the status of the test beam stand fabrication.... Comments about the mirror 3 point mount evaluation from Syracuse.... Comments about the thermistors located on the HPD readouts. Rich Schmitt requires a Volts vs. temperature curve. Herman Still needs progress on the gas recirculation system and monitoring system. The techs are currently busy with the beamline. Comments about HPD electronics cooling for the test beam. Estimate of the number of watts inside the enclosure?? Material compatibility issues To use carbon or not to use carbon, that is the question. What about mirrors, mirror support panel, windows. What other material compatibility issues await us?? Acrylic availability Need to investigate not using acrylic windows for the pmt arrays and also possibly not the mapmts...... WBS and cost book Waiting for fermi cost estimates on the HPD hexad, beehive assembly fixture, and 3 point mirror mounts....Have a general cost for the RICH tank.
