Ellis Island

Opened on January 1, 1892, Ellis Island became the nation's premier federal immigration station. In operation until 1954, the station processed over 12 million immigrant steamship passengers. The main building was restored after 30 years of abandonment and opened as a museum on September 10, 1990.

Today, over 40 percent of America's population can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island.

Save Ellis Island

Since 1998, Save Ellis Island has partnered with the National Park Service to bring thirty unrestored buildings located on Islands Two and Three to life for the future generations.  The non-profit organization is raising the funds to adaptively re-use these buildings.  The Ferry Building was restored and reopened to the public in April, 2007.  Click here for more information about these plans.

Did You Know?
Since the passage of the "Steerage Act of 1819", passenger manifests have been required for all arriving vessels to be delivered to the U.S. Government and reported to Congress. This document, used for inspection at Ellis Island, has become an important starting point in researching family history.
