Dr. Jean-Marc Dewaele is a Lecturer in Interlanguage studies; French linguistics and sociolinguistics at the French Department of Birkbeck College. He received a Ph. D in romance languages and literature, at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with "summa cum laude", in 1993, with a dissertation entitled 'Variation synchronique dans l'interlangue française'

This work is situated in the field of Applied Linguistics and builds on the model developed by Levelt, 1989. Interstylistic and interindividual variation was analysed in the French interlanguage of 39 Dutch-speaking students. Variation was measured through a number of quantified linguistic variables indicating the level of formality, fluidity and complexity of speech. Factor analysis and multivariate analysis was used to identify the situational, social, psychological and sociobiographical variables that underlie the observed variation.
