Stennis Space Center Stennis Space Center, MS 39529-6000 (228) 688-3341 RELEASE: STS-04-104 SSC EMPLOYEES RECEIVE COVETED SILVER SNOOPY AWARD HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. — Four NASA Stennis Space Center (SSC) employees were honored Oct. 28 with the Astronaut Corps' own personal achievement award, the "Silver Snoopy." Among the recipients was NASA's Bryon Maynard (a native of Bostic, N.C.) of Lacombe, La. Other Silver Snoopy recipients included Mississippi Space Services' Tim Jarrell of Picayune, Miss., and Doug Dike of McNeill, Miss.; and SaiTech Inc.'s Margie Pharr of Metairie, La. Each honoree received a silver pin flown on a Space Shuttle mission and a letter of commendation and certificate, both signed by NASA Astronaut Kenneth D. Cockrell, who presented the awards. While at SSC, Cockrell also participated in activities for the center's annual Total Health & Safety Day, which aims to heighten awareness of safe operations in every aspect of work at the center. Cockrell, a mission specialist and veteran of five space flights, is Director of Operations, Russia, in Star City, Russia. He serves as the liaison between NASA's Astronaut Office and the training organization at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City. The Silver Snoopy Award, initiated 34 years ago, recognizes individuals for professional dedication and outstanding efforts that greatly enhance the safety and success of human space flight missions. Of all the Space Flight Awareness Awards, the Silver Snoopy best symbolizes the intent and spirit of Space Flight Awareness. An astronaut always presents the Silver Snoopy because it is the astronauts' own award for outstanding performance, contributing to flight safety and mission success. Less than 1 percent of the space program workforce receives it annually. -END- Related Multimedia : + http://www.nasa.gov/centers/stennis/news/newsreleases/2004/STS-04-104-cptn1.html -end-
