NOAA RECOGNIZES MARGIE STINSON AS ENVIRONMENTAL HERO IN 2001

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has recognized Margie Stinson as one of 27 Environmental Heroes for 2001. Stinson is one of eight environmental heroes who have worked extensively with NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

Stinson has volunteered her time to develop a course for high school and college students on boating, navigation and other skills which help NOAA fisheries scientists conduct sea turtle research in San Diego Bay, Calif. The students use these skills to help NOAA scientists with sea turtle tracking and habitat research. Margie has also coordinated with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Port of San Diego, and San Diego Gas and Electric to increase sea turtle conservation.

"We sincerely appreciate the tireless work by Margie Stinson for marine resource stewardship," said Bill Hogarth, Acting Assistant Administrator for NOAA fisheries. "Her hard work and dedication will assist us in fulfilling the mission of NOAA fisheries and ensuring that current and future generations can enjoy a healthy and thriving environment."

Established in 1995 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, the annual Environmental Hero award is presented to individuals and organizations that volunteer their time and energy to help NOAA accomplish its mission of describing, predicting, and protecting.

NOAA fisheries is an agency of the Commerce Department. The agency is dedicated to protecting and preserving our nation's living marine resources through scientific research, management, enforcement, and the conservation of marine mammals and other protected marine species and their habitat.
