Content Description

Abstract: Hyperdistribution grid for all butterfly species. This grid was created from the original individual butterfly grids by running hypergrid.aml. This creates a grid with all mammal species as fields. This allows the user to know what mammal species are predicted to be present in any given cell. This form of data is an analytical tool for evaluating biodiversity. A 1 in a species column indicates the presence of the species; a 0 indicates abscence. The count and value fields are not meaningful for analysis since they simply represent the number of unique combinations of species.
Purpose: The purpose of this dataset it to provide an analytical tool for evaluating biodiversity. Measures of species richness are simple, straight-forward assessments of the diversity of wildlife within a given area. Although species richness does not account for species composition and the accuracy of richness measures have many inherent shortcomings, the hyperdistribution grids created for the SCGAP project are useful for characterizing regional biological diversity and for ssessing the relative contribution of a proposed area. However, caution is needed in their interpretation.
