Interesting Fact:
If a salamander or newt loses a limb, the creature can simply grow a new one. The process is complicated -- cells must multiply, morph into all the different cell types present in a mature limb (such as skin, muscle, bone, blood vessel, and nerve), and migrate to the right location. Scientists know that special growth factors and hormones are involved, but no one knows exactly how regeneration happens. |
