Description/Abstract The incorporation of labeled amino acid into the lipoprotein fraction by tubercle bacilli is exarained. When tubercle bacilli are incubated with the radioactive amino acid, radioactive lysine is found to be incorporated readily into this fraction. The paperchromatogram of this radioactive lipoprotein shows that there are at least three components detected by ninhydrine development and that each of thera is radioactive, but no free lysine is found. In the paperchromatograin of the acid hydrolysate of this lipoprotein, there are found nine spots detected by ninhydrine development. Two of them are highly labeled, and one is identified as lysine. The labeled amino acid is concluded to be tightly bound in the lipoprotein fractions. It is conjectured that in tubercle bacilli, the RNA fraction, containing RNAamino acids complexes, should not be expected to be a precursor of the lipoprotein, and it is thought that some component in the phenol-soluble fraction might have a role in the lipoprotein synthesis.
