Pneumonic plague bacilli can be spread by respiratory droplets
from an infected person who is coughing, talking or laughing. These droplets
can infect persons who are in close contact.
The bacilli enter through nasal and oral passages and travel to the lungs.
Y. pestis bacilli then multiply within the lungs. A person infected with
pneumonic plague will likely die without early treatment, usually within 24
hours.
