MONTHLY WHOLESALE TRADE: SALES AND INVENTORIES
NOVEMBER 2004

Intention to Revise Wholesale Data: Monthly wholesale sales, inventories, and inventories/sales ratios will be revised based on the results of the 2003 Annual Trade Survey and the preliminary results of the 2002 Census of Wholesale Trade. Revised unadjusted and corresponding adjusted data are scheduled for release on March 31, 2005.

 

Sales

November 2004 sales of merchant wholesalers, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading-day differences but not for price changes, were $283.7 billion, up 0.7 percent (+/-0.7%) from the revised October level and were up 14.0 percent (+/-1.3%) from the November 2003 level. The October preliminary estimate was revised downward $0.1 billion or -0.1 percent. November sales of durable goods increased 0.9 percent (+/-1.0%) from last month and were up 16.9 percent (+/-2.0%) from a year ago. Compared to last month, sales of computer and computer peripheral equipment and software increased 4.7 percent, while motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and supplies decreased 2.3 percent. November sales of nondurable goods were up 0.4 percent (+/-0.8%) from last month and were up 11.4 percent (+/-1.7%) from last year. Compared to last month, sales of chemicals and allied products were up 3.5 percent.

Inventories

Total inventories of merchant wholesalers, after adjustment for seasonal variations but not for price changes, were $326.8 billion at the end of November, up 1.1 percent (+/-0.5%) from last month and were up 11.5 percent (+/-1.3%) from a year ago. The October preliminary estimate was virtually unchanged. End-of-month inventories of durable goods increased 1.3 percent (+/-0.5%) from October and were up 16.7 percent (+/-1.5%) from last November. Inventories of computer and computer peripheral equipment and software increased 4.0 percent from last month and inventories of metals and minerals, except petroleum increased 3.9 percent. End-of-month inventories of nondurable goods increased 0.9 percent (+/-0.7%) from October and were up 4.0 percent (+/-1.7%) compared to last November. Inventories of apparel, piece goods, and notions increased 2.7 percent from last month and inventories of beer, wine, and distilled alcoholic beverages increased 1.7 percent.

Inventories/Sales Ratio

The November inventories/sales ratio for merchant wholesalers, based on seasonally adjusted data, was 1.15. The November 2003 ratio was 1.18.
