Snowe, McKernan Statement on the Passing of Gus Barber

November 24, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe and former Governor John R. McKernan, Jr. released the following statement today upon learning of the passing of Maine business icon, Augustus Barber:

"We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Gus who was not only a legendary force in Maine business and a longtime giant in our state's food industry, but an individual who truly exemplified the very best of the American dream. Having worked as a meat cutter for eight years after serving his country in World War II, Gus, who was a first generation American, started his own beef and poultry company in 1955 with his wonderful wife, Marjorie, to whom he was devoted in marriage for 55 years. And what began as an enterprise in their kitchen grew into what all of us know as Barber Foods, an exceptional company with 800 employees. Throughout his life, Gus never forgot his goal which was to be successful and help others. He not only lived the promise of America – he did everything he possibly could to ensure that it was available to others, and for that, and his countless civic contributions, we are all forever grateful.

At this most difficult of times, we extend our deepest condolences to Marjorie as well as their children – and the entire Barber Foods family during this period of tremendous loss."
