      Abstract: 
        This dataset is a polygon coverage of the Fire Clay coal zone that represents
        the areas in which resources were calculated and is only part of the full 
        outcrop of the coal zone. Parts of the boundaries of the resource areas represent
        the 14-inch thickness isoline of the Fre Clay coal or the sub-crop limits of
        data availability; other parts of the boundaries are actual outcrop. 
        The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found
        elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C.
       
        This resource model for the Fire Clay coal zone must be considered 
        provisional, because the correlation of the zone continues to be
        evaluated in West Virginia.
      Purpose:
        The purpose of Professional Paper 1625 is to release the interpretation
        of assessment and modeling data for the the top-producing coal beds in the
        northern and central Appalachian Basin coal region. 
        The dataset has been generalized and is useful only in regional studies.  
        Individuals who do not have an internet connection to access the detailed
        data coverages interactively through GeoDE or who cannot use the ARC/INFO
        export covers provided on this CD-ROM can use this coverage to obtain limited
        information on the limited information on the Fire Clay coal zone.

      areas of coal outcrop may have been lost in the generalization process and will
      not match the detailed coverages available for this coal bed elsewhere in 
      Professional Paper 1625-C. All internal no-coal and thin-coal areas have
      been dissolved for display purposes. Tennessee was not evaluated in this dataset.
      Fire Clay resource areas are a subset of the entire areal extent of the Fire Clay
      coal zone.

          1. In Kentucky, regional coal bed outcrop map was compiled from
          1:24000-scale base maps. Some maps were digitized by
          Kentucky Revenue Cabinet personnel from mylar geologic
          quadrangle maps in the course of a tax assessment program.
          Others were digitized by KGS personnel from either mylar
          overlays or paper coal-resource work maps.
          2. Coal bed outcrops that were not mapped on the geological
          quadrangle maps were inferred on the basis of overlying or
          underlying beds, known interburden thicknesses and point
          elevations of the coal bed. Contributions by : G. Weisenfluh,
          E. Thacker, and W. Andrews to create source KY-135.

          ARC/INFO.  Arcs were closed to quadrangle edges, if outcrop not complete.

          The resource areas were defined as coal greater than 14-inches thick within
          the outcrop extent. The isopach cover from Kentucky (KY-136) produced the
          14-inch isolines to make a new coverage of coal greater than 14-inches thick;
          polygon topology was built. The polygons were clipped with the outcrop
          (KY-135) to form the Kentucky resource areas.

          The Virginia outcrop, the Kentucky modified outcrop file, and the West Virginia
          outcrop arcs were then appended into one data set.  This data set 
          was edited to resolve inconsistencies between maps and to incorporate 
          revisions. Common attributions were created.

          West Virginia crop required a line limiting the resources to 14 inches thick
          (or a line representing the limit of available data) in order to close the
          resource area polygons.  A coal thickness model was developed for the Fire Clay in EarthVision
          (see metadata for c9125is.e00) using stratigraphic data stored in the National Coal 
          Resources Data System (NCRDS) and obtained from the State geological surveys.
          The 14-inch isoline was selected and manually merged with the appended outcrop file,  
          this line became the northern extent of the coal zone in West Virginia.
