"A Philosophical Look At Some Issues Related to Multi-laboratory Collaborations, And Some Things To Think About Next Time." Large science facilities of the future will doubtless be constructed by multi-lab partnerships due to their overwhelming political, cost, and technical advantages. This presentation includes a mostly-philosophical look at some of the issues, both human and technical, inherent in the use of multi-lab technical collaborations to construct large scientific facilities. The speaker, Dr. Marion White (ASD-PHY), recently returned to APS after working for four years on the Spallation Neutron Source Project, a six-USDOE-laboratory partnership to construct a $1.4B world-leading neutron-scattering facility at ORNL. It looks like the new committee members and WPI will be in place by the end of November or soon thereafter.

In response to needs that you identified in the WIST Survey and that are presented in the RESC report, the new Steering Committee will include a member from each ALDship, along with an alternate.  Each ALDship member will interface both with the ALD and with the S&T women in that ALD's Divisions.  This change in membership will provide for improved Lab-wide communication on issues and ideas.

A big THANK YOU goes to the following members and friends of the RESC for their persistence and dedication in bringing this report to its final completion:
Bakul Banerjee (now at Fermilab), Maryka Bhattacharyya, Katherine Harkay, Kirsten Laurin-Kovitz, Eliane Lessner, Dongqi Li, Natasha Meshkov, Elizabeth Moog, Maria Petra, Debby Quock, Tijana Rajh, Carole Szpunar, Marcia Torres, and Marion Thurnauer

We hope you enjoy reading this product of much labor!   Feel free to send your comments to any member of the RESC committee.
With best regards,
Maryka Bhattacharyya

I received the invitation below to participate in an NSF sponsored project at ISU. I had originally hoped to attend myself but have since received a summons for jury service. Anu is looking for someone to visit ISU next week (Mon, Tues or Wed). They currently have 4-5 pm blocked but if necessary we could coordinate an evening event. If anyone is interested and available, please let me know asap. I realize this is VERY short notice. Thanks for considering this opportunity. We (Dr. Kenton Machina, my Co-PI and I) recently acquired a grant from the NSF to implement a project "An Integrated Approach to Change Attitudes of College Freshmen Toward Female Participation in STEM". STEM is an NSF-coined acronym Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We call our program "Pathways". Here's the gist of our project: Graduating students take with them the interests, attitudes, and values they have developed as undergraduates. Therefore, even those students who do not complete STEM degrees will take with them attitudes that may well impact their own future children, their own future employees, and their own future stances on public policy affecting STEM. This project seeks to change the attitudes of adults (parents, undergraduate advisors, and faculty) and young college freshmen (both females and males) regarding the participation of women in all fields of science, mathematics, engineering and technology, and it seeks to influence freshmen women to pursue STEM coursework in their college careers. I would like to talk to you about the possibility of your visit to our campus for our "Pathways" graduation to present a seminar to our freshmen (both males and females), faculty, and advisors that participated in the program. The Pathways activities focus on the STS (Science-Technology-Society) approach, taking the position that everyone must be scientifically and technologically literate to serve as productive citizens in today's world. I visited the ANL webpage and noticed that you chaired the Women in Science Conference for high-school girls. I would like to talk to you about your experiences and your availability for a possible visit to Illinois State University in Normal, IL. I'll appreciate your response. Thanks in advance, Anu ------------------------------------------------ Anu A.
