Brent Wellman, On Creating Lift

On Thursday, February 5, Brent Wellman, 2GCHAS Project Manager, presented a very uplifting lecture/demonstration for 45 minutes with some activities using airfoils with unusual shapes that can generate lift.

For more information about lift read the section on "What forces act on an airplane?" in the background section and to add to your hands on understanding of lift you might want to try some of the lessons in the teacher's resource section like "Funnel Follies" and "Loop Airplane". We also suggest you read Brent's autobiography.

Activities

Brent demonstrated some experiments about generating lift. These activities are easily repeated at home or in the classroom. Below are the supplies required for each experiment and a link to the real media clip of each experiment (Sorry an audio only file is not available). These clips are under 2 minutes each and can be viewed with Real Player. To learn more about this technology and to download this software go to the links for Download the RealPlayer, and Technical Overview at the bottom of this page.

Archived Event

An archive of the lecture with Brent Wellman. These archives, audio and media, are approximately 45 minutes in length. They include the experiments list above and some examples of airfoils and a discussion of Bernoulli's principle.

  • Download the RealPlayer. (The application program that allows you to hear or watch the events.)
  • If you are unsure of which technologies your connectivity
and desktop platform will support, you may want to review the
    Technical Overview for this event.
  • You may also want to Test The Technologies.
