Location Search

(Usage, Multi-Locations, Gazetteer, US Concise Gazetteer Designation Names (Feature Types), International Gazetter Designation Names)

Usage

The location search is used to constrain your search parameters to a particular geographical location. The location field accepts any unambiguous search format. If you want data over Maryland, you can type in 'Maryland' into the location search box, and it will constrain your search results to results over Maryland. This is done using a gazetteer; please see below for more information about the gazetteer. A user can also enter a bounding box into the search box in the form of '(maxLat,maxLon),(minLat,minLon).' Mirador will recognize bounding boxes in many formats.

Multi-Locations

This allows users to enter many locations into the location field using an OR separated list. Data will be spatially constrained by a union of all locations. Each coordinate may be separated by end-of-line characters if your browser supports this. Coordinates may be entered in pairs as latitude/longitude boxes, or as single points.

Gazetteer

The location search uses a gazetteer to translate a place, or geographic name, to a (latitude, longitude) point. The gazetteer is a composite of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency's (NGA) International Gazetteer, located at http://gnswww.nga.mil/geonames/GNS/index.jsp, and the US Geological Survey's (USGS) US Concise and Antartica gazetteers, located at: http://geonames.usgs.gov/index.html.

You may enter any part of a gazetteer feature name or feature type. For example, entering mountain canada will return Dillon Mountain, mountain, (Nunavut Canada). Additionally, a box listing up to 10 other selected places with the words mountain and canada will appear.
