PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL ON FOOD SAFETY TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING IN CHICAGO AREA

     WASHINGTON, November 6,1998 -- On Tuesday, November 10, 1998, President
Clinton's newly formed Council on Food Safety will sponsor the third of four
regional public meetings to discuss creation of a national strategic plan to
reduce foodborne and waterborne illness and to improve the safety of the
nation's food supply.  

     The public meeting will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the
Schaumburg Marriott Hotel, 50 North Martingale Road, Schaumburg, Illinois.  It
is open to the press and to the public.  The following officials are expected
to attend the meeting:

     Caren Wilcox, Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of
Agriculture.

          James O'Hara, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of
     Health and Human Services.

          Jim Aidala, Associate Assistant Administrator, U.S. Environmental
     Protection Agency.
