Data Migration Facility on the Cray and RAID disk on the workstations have supplied disk resources efficiently but we
are at 90% utilization and running out of disk space. Please send unfrequently used data to offline tape. Use Cray Reel
Librarian on the Cray (see below for instructions) and the DAT, Exabyte, and faster - larger DLT tape on the
workstations to archive (tar) data sets. Remove files that are not needed! If a workstation disk fills then Network File
System waits for more space (that will never arrive) and demands extra cpu resources setting up a cascade of "hung"
workstations. See Keith Brill for a script and suggestions for checking the free disk space before you write and John
McCoy for scripts to control tar files. New disk space will be online soon on sgi51 (20GB extra) but this is all that is
planed given our budget. The workstations work without problems if we keep our disk utilization under 90%!

A Must Read for Cray Users
- Small files (<0.2Mbyte) on /wd2, /wd0, /c90disk1/g01,
/ndska/g01 and /dmlite3 as well as /dm are not backed up!
- Small files are 100% backed up on /emcsrc3/wdxxyy/...
- Files (>0.2Mbyte) are automatically backed up on Silo tapes created through DMF.
Cray3 (C90) Data Migration Facility in conjunction
with the Silo tape robot are used to manage the disk
area called /dmlite3. /dmlite3 contains or is known as
/wd0, /wd2, /c90disk1/g01, /ndska/g01. This system
provides backup only to files greater then 0.2Mbyte!
This means that source codes, make files, etc... on /wd2
are not backed up since they are usually smaller than
0.2Mbytes. If the /dmlite3 disk is lost, then users lose
their small files. Place your small source codes, make
files, etc... on the disk /emcsrc3, for example for user
wdxxyy:
cd /emcsrc3
mkdir wdxxyy
cd wdxxyy
cp or tar your source and make files here!
/emcsrc3 is an area that is backed up by Cray systems
staff and not "floated" to DMF. Users have a small quota
limit on /emcsrc3 which is accessible by Cray4&5 as is
/dmlite3.
The /wd2 disk on Cray4&5 is located on Cray5 and
operates with DMF just like Cray3 /wd2 but is a smaller
independent disk area than Cray3 /wd2. If the links are
down on Cray 4 one can rlogin to Cray5 and still work
with Cray4 &5 /wd2.
Cray Reel Librarian
Cray Reel is like your own private DMF, useful for
archiving directories and files. Here is how to use it:
- Need "-q tape -lUa 1" added to your QSUB command to
put your job in the Silo queue (Silo is only accessible from
NQS batch).
- "rsv SILO" in your script reserves a silo tape drive for you.
- "tpmnt -X -g SILO -l sl -H 755 -S ${volsetname} \
-n -q n -h 755 -P ${Name_for_your_Stuff} -x 99365"
All the above options are necessary as is to mount your Cray
Reel tape. You choose the volsetname (max 12 characters)
as in Korn shell: volsetname=Exp6.970127 and
Name_for_your_Stuff=pgbfiles.tar (max 17 characters) .
- "tar cvf ${Name_for_your_Stuff} . " the "." (dot)
means everything in this directory (and below), or you can
specify the actual files you want to archive in place of or in
addition to the dot.
- "rls -a" releases the silo drive to go about its business.
To read back your data, you need to know your
${volsetname} and ${Name_for_your_Stuff} in the same
tpmnt command as above, followed by a tar command with
xvf instead of cvf. Here are some Cray Reel commands to
aid you in this file saving experience.
rlr vslist ;#Lists all your volsetnames
rlr volset=${volsetname} vsv ;#Location of your volset*
rlr volset=${volsetname} vsf ;#Lists all files in the volset
*If a Silo tape is not accessed in month, it is moved out
of the Silo to the T-room where it is accessed whenever
you need it by first, sending an E-mail to the Tape
Librarian, Leon.Nathan@noaa.gov and asking him to
move your tape from the "T-room to the Silo". In your
E-mail specify the volset# as shown from an "rlr
volset=${volsetname} vsv" command. It will take one
business day to move your tape to the Silo.
Take care to arrange your Silo jobs to work with DMF,
especially if you use /dm, as Miss Cray_Manners would
not appreciate you keeping the tape transports waiting
for a dmget! For example, have one job get all your
(most likely) migrated files and then QSUB your Cray
Reel job.
Cart90 Tapes
You've heard of these? When a Cray Reel tape is not in
the Silo or if you want to work with a tape outside the
Silo, we call it Cart90. Here is how to use it:
- Need "-q tape -lUb 1" added to your QSUB command -
note the only change here is an "a" became a "b". Like Silo
access this is an NQS (QSUB) batch only procedure.
- "rsv CART90" in your script on a line by itself reserves a
cart90 drive.
- "tpmnt -X -g CART90 -l sl -H 755 -S ${volsetname} \
-n -q n -h 755 -P ${Name_for_your_Stuff} -x 99365"
All the above options are necessary as is to mount your Cray
Reel tape. You choose the volsetname (max 12 characters)
as in Korn: volsetname=Exp6.970127 and
Name_for_your_Stuff=pgbfiles.tar (max 17 characters
here) .
Date: January 21, 1997 Number 10
- "tar cvf ${Name_for_your_Stuff} . " the "." (dot) for
everything in this directory (and below), or you can specify
the actual files you want to archive in place of or in addition
to the dot.
Take care to arrange your CART90 jobs to work with
DMF, especially if you use /dm, as Miss Cray_Manners
would not appreciate you keeping the tape transports
waiting for a dmget! For example, have one job get all
your (most likely) migrated files and then QSUB your
Cray Reel job.
JoHanna Wilding's Column
JoHanna has prepared a pamphlet containing how to
access our workstation tape drives and use tar to save
datasets. You can get a copy from her and we will post it
on the www as well. JoHanna can be reached at x7269
and wd20jh by E-mail. Use mail to send and register
your work station problems to the User Support
helpdesk. Report your problems to JoHanna or
helpdesk@sun1.
Printer Updates
- Old and New Printers and Services:
The lpr command on PC's: (Unix and Cray lpr commands
are similar but drop -S HostAddress from the lpr. vi the file
/etc/printcap for the Unix and Cray names of our printers):
The -v option in the PC lpr command is for PostScript
files that are large, more than 2-4MB. In UNIX a -s is
used for this. The -h option will cause lpr to not print the
header page.
From the CRAYs and Workstations
lpr -P phaser1PS PostScriptFile
lpr -P phaser2PS PostScriptFile
lpr -P fddbgl <ddbgl all files> only workstations
lpr -P fadbgl <adbgl all files> only workstations[
lpr -P SP <PostScript file (Ranjic's office)>
lpr -h -P calps <PostScript file-color Calcomp>
lpr -P ltrhdps <.ps file-Letter Head>
lpr -P ltrhdpcl <HP LaserJet II file-Letter Head>
lpr -h -P trps <PostScript with Transparencies>
(The above 3 printers located in the front office.)
lpr -P phaser2 <Postscript file-REANL printer>
lpr -P ddf <ddbgl-all file types> [
lpr -P adf <adbgl-all file types> [
lpr -P adb <ADBGL ASCII text filename>
lpr -P adp <ADBGL PostScript filename>
lpr -P ddb <DDBGL ASCII & HP file>
lpr -P ddp <DDBGL PostScript filename>
lpr -P ddv <DDBGL 132 column file>
lpr -P ddh <DDBGL HPGL file>
lpr -P ddt <DDBGL tektronix code file>
- The transparency printer name is -P trps as in:
lpr -P trps -h -S ddhp3 PostScriptFileName.
Always use the -h option to avoid the banner page
as there are often transparencies loaded.
- PC's can send directly to phaser1PS by an
lpr -P phaser1PS -S ddserv4 PostScriptFile
-P PS and -P phaser1 are also allowed printer names for
phaser1PS so long as -S ddserv4 is present.
phaser2PS is in the short range lab and is connected to the
sgi62 printer port. Access it from PC by:
lpr -P phaser2PS -S sgi62 YourPostScriptFile
- NEW! - 11x17 PRINTING ON BGL
lpr -P PEBP -S ddbgl < Postscript 11x17 paper>
lpr -P VEBP -S ddbgl <ascii 11x17 132 column by 110 lines
like old IBM printout>
- NEW! - DUPLEX PRINTING ON BGL
To make two-sided copy of any file on the BGL's:
Add to the first line of your print file the following
characters:
<esc><esc><esc>OD where <esc> is an "escape" character,
27)16
A file containing these characters can be found in
~wd23ja/twosided. You can ftp (binary) this file from any
work station: ftp sginn where nn=70-81
account/PassWord
cd ~wd23ja
binary
get twosided
quit
Then, for example, on your PC you can do a
copy twosided+myprint newprint
lpr -P FEAL -S ddbgl newprint
to print two sided pages on DDBGL in the equipment room.
