General Comment

Secretary Kempthorne,

National parks attract millions of visitors each year seeking to view wildlife, learn
about the country's history, or experience unique landscapes. They offer the
opportunity for individuals and families to recreate in a safe environment. Allowing
loaded and concealed guns in our parks could change that forever.

The current regulations governing gun use and transport in our national parks work
well and should not be changed. Last amended by the Reagan Administration in
1983, the existing rules have served our parks and the public well for 25 years and
can continue to do so for decades to come. Please abandon the proposed
changes and maintain the existing “unloaded and stored” gun rules in our national
parks.

The Ranger Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Association of National
Park Rangers said they support the 1983 regulations and oppose any moves to
change gun use in our national parks. These men and women who ensure the
public’s safety on a day-to-day basis know best how to manage firearms in our
parks.

Please maintain the existing “unloaded and stored” regulations in our national
parks.

Thank you.
