Interpretive Summary: A new dry bean cultivar 'Orca' was released by USDA-ARS and Washington State University. Orca is a novel bean with black and white seed color that represents a niche market class for North America. A parent of this cultivar is the Anasazi bean that is a Native American landrace from the southwest US. Orca is well adapted to US growing conditions and is resistant to viral and root rot diseases that plague bean production in the Pacific Northwest. This bean will contribute to on farm crop diversity and provide a new niche market class to the U. S. bean industry.

Technical Abstract: 'Orca' black-and-white Anasazi-type (the word Anasazi has been copyrighted by Adobe Bean Company of Dove Creek, CO) dry ben (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) (Reg. no. CV-206, PI 632344) was developed cooperatively by the Washington Agricultural Research Center and the USDA-ARS and released in 2002. Orca has an upright growth habit (II-A), mid- to late-maturity, multiple disease resistance, and is adapted to the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Its unique feature is medium plumb, black, and white mottled shiny seed coat color.
