Pesticide usage - summary

This section describes Burlington Board of Health's (BOH) investigation of complaints involving the detection of pesticide odors in the local high school.  BOH investigation determined that inexperienced or over zealous staff members had misapplied pesticides within local schools.  It was also noted that some of the infestations were the result of poor food storage and inadequate housekeeping.

Upon review of state pesticide control regulations, the school maintenance department decided the best response to these problems was to discontinue pesticide applications by its staff and to seek contracted services for pest management.  In addition, efforts have been implemented to enhance housekeeping efforts while also pursuing an integrated pest management approach utilizing less or non toxic alternatives to pest control and minimization.
