MBSF Research Associate

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
MONTEREY BAY SANCTUARY FOUNDATION (MBSF) AND
SANCTUARY INTEGRATED MONITORING NETWORK (SIMON)

February 20, 2004

TO: Scientific Community and Interested Parties

SUBJECT: MBSF Research Associate to collect and synthesize existing data on marine endangered species that utilize the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Under the direction of Sanctuary Integrated Monitoring Network (SIMoN) Director and Scientist, the selected candidate will complete an assessment of the endangered species that live in, transit through, or otherwise use habitats and natural resources within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS). The Research Associate is expected to collect and synthesize existing data on the wide variety of marine endangered species that are protected and managed by local, state, and federal agencies. A gap analysis of these data and needs assessment will be completed to direct future Sanctuary monitoring efforts. In particular, the Research Associate will:

  • Undertake an extensive review of the existing literature and data sets on endangered species, building upon MBNMS data
  • Compile existing demographic data for each species
  • Interview experts in the field to determine species status, spatial distribution, breeding sites, and document how humans affect population recovery
  • Examine which species are migrants vs. residents, and document migratory pathways and linkages to other Sanctuaries
  • Develop an action plan, including questions to address, and identify monitoring needs that SIMoN should address
  • Determine which guideposts are indicative of progress towards successful population recovery
  • Synthesize the above in a technical publication

Once the technical publication has been completed, it will be used to direct subsequent monitoring and research efforts on endangered species within the MBNMS.

Qualifications include (with or without accommodation): Bachelors degree in science, graduate degree highly preferred; previous experience with library database searches; demonstrated ability to use bibliographic software (e.g., EndNote), Word, and Powerpoint. The abilities to: work effectively with other scientists and government agency staff; recall, retrieve, and communicate detailed information clearly and accurately, both verbally and in written form; work with interruptions yet still meet deadlines; and exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment and discretion. This is a one-year position with a salary range of $50,000 to $75,000 commensurate with experience.
