Research Progress and Plans

CRIS Project Number: 1275-22000-134-00D
Start Date: 05/24/96 Term Date: 05/20/01
(Replaces CRIS 1275-22000-089-00D)

CRIS Project Title: Discover, Synthesize, Develop Attractants and Behavior-Modifying Chemicals to Manage Insects

Objectives:

  • Discover, identify and synthesize potent attractants for tephritid fruit flies of economic importance.

Progress:

  • Carries out amenable for industrial scale synthesis of the ethyl(1R, 2R, 5R)-5-iodo-2-methylcyclohexane-1-carboxylate, or active Ceralure B1 isomer, as attractant for the Mediterranean fruit fly. Conservative estimates suggest that this compound is at least 7-10 times more active than trimedlure, a standard lure for male medfly detection. Synthesized multi-gram quantity of Ceralure B1 for the extensive bioassays.

Plans:

  • Modify existing synthesis or develop new methodologies applicable for commercialization of ethyl (1R, 2R, 5R)-5-iodo-2-methylcyclohexane-1-carboxylate.
  • Utilize (1R, 2R, 5R)-5-iodo-2-methylcyclohexane-1-carboxylate as a lead compound to develop other more potent analogs that could be used in medfly detection and possibly in annihilation.
  • Discover, synthesize, and develop semiochemicals to be used for monitoring and suppressing other pest fruit flies, particularly of Anastrepha genera.
