New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park

Whether it’s a ranger led jazz roots program, Wednesday piano series, Music for All Ages kid’s program, or our popular Saturday concert series, The New Orleans Jazz NHP offers many opportunities to cool down with jazz! Don’t forget to check out the park sponsored kid’s stage at the Old U.S. Mint during Satchmo Summer Fest on Saturday, August 2nd.

Tuesday, August 5
Thelonius Monk Institute Jazz Quartet
1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
The Thelonius Monk Institute, in partnership with Loyola University, is comprised of some of the most talented young jazz students on the planet. Join these gifted graduate level students for an hour long performance.

Wednesday, August 6
Jim Hession                        12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
Pianist Jim Hession performs dazzling versions of stride, ragtime, and classic jazz favorites.

Thelonius Monk Institute     1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Students from the Thelonius Monk Institute perform an hour long concert.

Kids Program with the Storyville Stompers Brass Band
Children are invited to bring their own instruments for this traditional jazz workshop with members of the Storyville Stompers Brass Band.

Thais Clark                         2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Nobody can belt out the blues and classic jazz numbers quite like vocalist Thais Clark. Join Thais and her swinging 6 piece band for this traditional jazz concert.

Lionel Ferbos & the Louisiana Shakers
2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Having just celebrated his 97th birthday, trumpeter Lionel Ferbos provides a living link to the earliest days of jazz. Join Mr. Ferbos and his 6 piece traditional jazz band for an afternoon of great New Orleans jazz.

Children are invited to bring their own instruments for this traditional jazz workshop with members of the Storyville Stompers Brass Band.

Jazz a La Creole              2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Join musical rangers Bruce Barnes and Matt Hampsey as they team up with the Louisiana Sunspots for a program of Caribbean influenced Louisiana Creole songs.

Don’t miss the jazz roots series performed by park staff on August 1st, 5th, 7th, 14th, 15th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, 26th, 28th, and 29th. Each musical demonstration will last from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. and will highlight a significant musical development in the evolution of New Orleans jazz.

Thelonius Monk Institute performances made possible through Community Partnership Grant from New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Foundation. 

These activities are free and open to the public and will take place in the park’s Visitor Center at 916 N. Peters Street, unless specified. The Visitor Center is the site of programs and music performances relating to the origins, development and progression of the uniquely American musical art form of jazz. Did You Know?
April is Jazz Awareness month. This recognition was created by the Smithsonian Institute in 2001 and is celebrated nation-wide every year. So April is a great time to visit the park as a variety of special music programs are offered and the city hosts several music festivals.
