to Assist Thais Affected by Floods

U.S. Ambassador Ralph L. Boyce today provided USD 50,000 from the U.S. government in disaster assistance to the Thai Red Cross. The assistance, made available through USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, is in response to extensive damage caused in October by heavy rains and floods.
"The people of the United States will never forget and remain grateful for Thailand’s response following Hurricane Katrina. In the spirit of friendship and mutual cooperation and support, we offer this assistance as a symbol of our continuing longstanding friendship with the Thai people," U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Ralph L. Boyce said at a presentation ceremony at the Thai Red Cross in Bangkok.
Extensive monsoon rains over the past month and typhoon Xangshane, have led to severe flooding in 46 central and northern provinces of Thailand. The floods have resulted in scores of deaths, over 100,000 skin and respiratory ailments, impacted more than two million residents, forced evacuations of thousands of households, and caused massive infrastructure damage.
Given the magnitude of the emergency and continued humanitarian needs, the United States today provided USD 50,000 (2 million baht) under the Ambassador's Disaster Assistance Authority. Funds will be used to support Thai Red Cross activities in the affected provinces, including Red Cross emergency evacuation activities and procurement and distribution of emergency relief supplies, such as drinking water, hygiene kits, and basic household goods.
