BENNETT INTRODUCES SOCIAL SECURITY REFORM BILL
Senator Bennett introduced legislation on February 12, 2009, that would fix the looming Social Security crisis by focusing on making the program solvent without increasing taxes.
“If Congress is going to spend nearly a trillion dollars on a stimulus package, we have to have the courage to tackle entitlement spending as well,” said Bennett. “We are literally facing a retirement tsunami with the number of retirees projected to increase by 75% between 2010 and 2030. This legislation would ensure that our children and grandchildren will receive roughly the same level of benefits when they retire as current retirees do today and we can do this without raising taxes.”

BENNETT VOTES NO ON $838 BILLION STIMULUS BILL
Senator Bennett issued the following statement after voting in opposition of the $838 billion stimulus bill. The bill passed the Senate 61 to 37.
“While this bill includes some cuts in spending from earlier versions, I’m still not satisfied that it would provide sufficient stimulus to justify the long term problems that it will create,” said Bennett. “If Democratic leadership and the president had only been willing to take a little more time and examine the details with more careful scrutiny, we could have produced a bill that would achieve great results without creating long term risks. The economy is desperately in need of careful government action, but this bill does not meet that standard.” |
