NASA Exploring Space Challenges

Mission: Fuel Your Imagination! Challenge

Grades: 3-4, 5-6, or 7-8
Participation: Individual students

The Fuel Your Imagination Challenge is an opportunity for students to write a story related to scientific facts while utilizing their imagination!  Students will research NASA’s vision for space exploration, then write a short fictional story that incorporates real science, mathematics or engineering facts.  Each participating school hosts their own Local Challenge and then recommends one student to participate in the National Challenge organized by the NASA ESC.

Read last year's winning stories here.

The Fuel Your Imagination! Challenge objectives or students are to (1) learn about NASA's efforts to return to the moon, (2) understand the components of a story, such as character development, plot, climax and resolution, (3) write a fictional short story, and (4) learn to evaluate and critique each other’s work.

Detailed instructions about Fuel Your Imagination!, a classroom activity, the scoring rubric and more can be found in the FYI! Guide.
