No cost eye surgeries receive support from U.S. Embassy

December 19, 2008

Today, thirty surgeries to remove cataracts at no cost to the patients were carried out under the “Campaign get operated on at home with assurance and responsibility”. The eye surgeries were carried out by the “Paraguayan Ophthalmologic Society” with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Asuncion. Ambassador Liliana Ayalde visited the patients following their surgeries. The surgeries were made possible by the generous donation by the American company, Alcon, of optical lenses and surgery kits worth $10,500.

The objective of the campaign by the Paraguayan Ophthalmologic Society is to provide cataract surgeries and post operative care at no cost to patients that have limited economic resources. The U.S. Embassy has been able to support 160 eye surgeries through donations by private sector sponsors. A total of $53,900 has been donated by these sponsors for cataract surgeries to date.
