OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of the ophthalmologic compromise (OC) of the HIV infection in HIV/AIDS Peruvians. METHODS: A cohort of 61 HIV/AIDS patients underwent ophthalmologic examination every 2 months since 1991 through 1992. Patients were referred to the ophthalmologic center from the AIDS clinic at the Cayetano Heredia Hospital and from VIA LIBRE a non-governmental AIDS service organization. RESULTS: 29 AIDS and 32 HIV asymptomatic patients (CDC--classification) were evaluated. At the first evaluation 15 (31.7%) of 29 AIDS patients and 1(3.1%) of the asymptomatic patients had OC. Among the AIDS patients, 8 had retinal non infectious microangiopathy (RNIM) (27.6%), 6 had opportunistic infections (20.7%), 1 had Kaposi sarcoma--(3.4%) and 1 had optic atrophy (3.4%). During follow-up 5/8 patients with FNIM and 1/32 asymptomatic patients developed CMV retinitis. At the end of the follow-up period 19/29 (66%) AIDS patients had OC. CONCLUSION: OC is common among HIV/AIDS patients in Peru. Ophthalmologic examination should be performed in all patients even no clinical manifestations are present.
