Abstract:This book is the second in a series of thematic units designed especially for children who are deaf and hard of hearing in kindergarten through the elementary grades. The unit focuses on sea creatures and is divided into seven sections. Five sections contain lessons on particular sea animals including whales, turtles, starfish, octopuses, and seahorses. Another section contains lessons on general sea life (with an emphasis on fish), and the final section contains word games, such as word searches, word mix-ups, and crosswords. The word games are designed to provide additional opportunities for language reinforcement and are arranged to correspond to the sections on general sea life and the different sea animals. The unit uses a language experience approach that includes the following techniques: interactive writing, teaching vocabulary, reading books, using recipes, and making books, including auditory training, and creating story boards. The templates and the worksheets accompanying the lessons are presented in printable documents on the accompanying CD-ROM. Reduced-size reproductions of all the templates and worksheets are also included in the book, along with answer keys. (CR)
