Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of November 6 - 12, 1997 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 San Francisco Bay Area During the seven-day period ending at midnight on Wednesday, November 12, 1997 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded only nine earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. None were as large as M2.0. This total compares to 24 earthquakes during the prior seven-day period (October 30 - November 5), four of which were as large as M2. Earthquake activity was very light in the greater Bay Area over the past week. The largest event was a M1.9 on the central Calaveras about ten miles east of downtown San Jose. Northern & Central California Along with the Bay Area most of northern and central California was seismically quiet. The lone M2 event on the San Andreas barely qualified: a M2.0 Monday afternoon north of the Pinnacles National Monument. The Cape Mendocino area was equally quiet with a single M2.0 event just offshore of Eureka (7/2). Half a dozen M2 quakes were recorded in the Geysers geothermal area, the largest a M2.6 late Tuesday morning (#8/2). In central California a trio of M2's occurred in the Coalinga area: a M2.2 southeast of Kettleman City and a pair of M2.5's north of Avenal (#5/2). In contrast, the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada continued to be more active than usual with declining aftershock activity in the northern White Mountains following a M5.4 on November 2 (#1/2) and a continuing high level of activity in the Long Valley caldera (see below). In addition a M3.4 occurred seven miles northwest of Bridgeport followed by M2.5 and M2.8 aftershocks (#4/2). The Markleeville area produced one M2.3 shock (#3/2) and a pair of small M2's occurred east of Lake Tahoe (#6/2). The Quincy area, sight of a M4.8 last week, experienced a pair of M2 aftershocks early in the week and one M2.2 north of Portola (#2/2). Finally, a pair of small M2's occurred along the east side the Sacramento Valley about ten miles east of Cottonwood (#9/2). Long Valley Caldera Seismicity remained high during the week with over 200 earthquakes recorded of M1.5 and larger. Most of this week's events were located along the southeast side of the resurgent dome just west of the Fish Hatchery (#3/3) with lesser clusters of activity near the Highway 395 junction and east of Mammoth Lakes (#2/3). USA Seismicity (November 4 - 11) The National Earthquake Information Center reported a M4.9 occurred in southern Quebec, Canada last Wednesday night. The quake was felt strongly in many parts of southern Quebec and, less strongly, in Ottawa, Ontario, Edmundston, New Brunswick and throughout Maine, northern New Hampshire, norther Vermont, and in parts of northeastern New York (#3/4). Other domestic earthquakes of note included a M2.9 in northern Utah (#1/4), a M2.9 in southeastern Washington (#2/4), a M3.7 the was felt in Barstow, California (#4/4), a M4.0 that was felt widely in southwestern Montana (#5/4), and a M3.5 in northern Idaho (#6/4). The Planet Earth (November 4 - 11) A major earthquake occurred Saturday along the eastern Tibetan border with Xijiang, China (#2/5). This is believed to be the largest instrumentally located earthquake to have occurred in this area to date. However, no significant injury or damage was reported, due in part to the sparse population of this high mountain plateau, in part to the fact that most people in the area live in tents. Moderate earthquakes of note include: a M5.6 in central Greece (#1/5), a M5.7 along the coast of El Salvador (#3/5), and a M5.7 south of Honshu, Japan (#5/5). Table 1.
