Description/Abstract | The stability of flute waves in a low-density, unneutralized plasma in a simple magnetic mirror system is studied.^Numerical methods are used to find the eigenvalue spectrum of the boundary-value problem for the differential equation describing flute waves of the first and second radial modes.^The calculations shows that the eigenfrequency spectrum found lies beyond the range of possible singularity regions of this equation; correspondingly, the resonant points of the problem lie outside the plasma.^The growth rates calculated for the flute waves can be used to set upper limits on the density range for the instability for various values of the neutralization parameter.^A set of profiles of the eigenfunctions of the problem is found for the first and second radial modes over broad ranges of the parameters.^(AIP) |
